Since 2008 I have been on the faculty of the Department of Political Science at the University of South Carolina. Currently, I am a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Carolina Leadership Initiative. My areas of interest (both research and teaching) include Law and Judicial Politics, Research Methods, and Leadership.

Substantively my research focuses on the following:

  • Examining hierarchical relationships and strategic behavior in the U.S. federal judiciary
  • Measurement issues in judicial behavior (including measures of independence, legitimacy, and the law)
  • The influence of the federal judiciary on U.S. foreign policy and national security
  • The role of courts in developing the rule of law
  • Comparative judicial politics and its intersection with democratization
